On the evening of February 2, 2018 the Three Mountain Café in Waitsfield, Vermont presented a month-long exhibition of the poster art of long time valley resident and Goddard College graduate Jim Dodds. Since then Jim's artwork has appeared in SevenDaysVT and at the Summer Juried Show at the TW Wood gallery in Montpelier VT. In November 2019 he was invited to contribute a piece of new work to the Annual Gala at the Bennington Museum, with the theme “The Festival – Peace, Love, and Understanding” showcasing works from thirty selected Vermont artists reflecting the 1960s and how they shaped and changed things. Jim's medium is computer art and his posters grow from his pencil sketches and photos to layered bricolage of often retro, perhaps Peter Maxish, Mouse Studios, Grateful Dead era artwork, as well as excursions into logos, and what he calls lettersmithy. In the fall of 2016, I experienced some sort of artistic renaissance. All the rough scribbles and more refined pencil sketches I’d been accumulating in a flat file since the 1970’s started calling out to me, and I started scanning them…and playing with them. And I discovered that some alchemy of better tools and years of stewing in my 60’s influenced brain now meant I had something going. As I worked, old ideas generated new ideas and I found I had so many I had to set some aside for the next “generation” of my oeuvre.
