Where we begin is with you sending me a 2-3 page or 1000 word sample, from somewhere in the middle of your manuscript. I will edit that sample for free, so we can both get a clear impression of each other, and then give you an estimate. There’s a wide range in how long it takes to go over any particular author’s writing, and point out each one of the things that I feel are making it hard for the reader to enjoy the story you’re trying to tell. While some editors do Proofreading and Copy Editing separately I do both together for one price, and give you a Comments file that relates to developmental issues as well, at a rate that generally runs from $1.50 to $2.00 per page, and includes a second pass through*. Bear in mind that some manuscripts have a lot of errors, and require more time than this, and that no one catches every mistake. Major bestsellers get published constantly with typos and factual errors—but I'm very careful, and I'm good at this :-)
I also offer what I call "Deep Beta Reading." It’s hard for me to rein in my editing mode, so you will get a few direct suggestions, but the main idea of this service is a complete reading and review of your story, with extensive comments. For this service I charge $0.75 per page. It still takes time, even with my editor brakes on.
I’m glad to read just about any genre, from Poetry and Children's Books, to YA, to gritty erotica. Self-help and Non-fiction in general are welcome too. I’m glad to work on short stories and novellas or even screenplays, and spiritual and sexual themes, including LGBT, are all fine. There aren't any words I’m afraid of. I loved "The Shack," but anything with a strong traditional Christian slant is not my cup of tea, and I'm not a good match for what we affectionately call "bodice busters." I’m a dyed-in-the-wool Sci-Fi fan, including all kinds of dystopian stories, and a great admirer of the work of Mr. Stephen King, and his son Joe Hill. Oh. And yes. My wife and I live full-time in beautiful Vermont.
So... one more thing. READ IT OVER. I am not perfect, and it's your responsibility to make a final check for errors before submitting your work for publishing. And good luck!
